Seven and out as Thatcham go down

Bottom of the table Wokingham wreck leaders' 100 per cent start

IT was unlucky seven for Thatcham as they suffered the first defeat of the season in Division Three A of the Morrant Thames Valley League – at the hands of bottom of the table Wokingham II.

The table-toppers went into the game on the back of six straight wins, and having bowled out Wokingham for 196 in 51 overs would have fancied their chances of a seventh.

John Williams took 5-66 with only Peter Hicks’54 getting on top of the attack.

But Thatcham’s reply fell well short with only Matt Denness offering hope with his 61 as they were dismissed for 146 in the 37th over.

The consolation was that second in the table Aldershot also lost at the hands of Purley and remain 13 points adrift.

Newbury are fourth after their three wicket derby win over Falkland II.

Falkland were held to 186-8 in the maximum 52 overs while Newbury’s match-winner was Raj Pal with an unbeaten 90 in his side’s 189-7 as they got home in the 37th over.

Hugo Nel was again in form as Hungerford scored a 72 win over Bransgore in the Hampshire League’s second division.

Sam Rouse top-scored with 55 for Bransgore in their 221-7, but that was in response to Hungerford’s daunting 293-9 as Nel made 111.
