Preview: Six-race card at Newbury Racecourse this evening

The latest Flat meeting of the season at Newbury takes place on Thursday with a competitive six-race card in the evening.

The Summer Evening Series card kicks off at 6.05pm with an apprentice handicap over the short five furlongs before coming to a close at 9.00 with a class five handicap over the mile and a quarter trip.

Read below for a full rundown of the Newbury card courtesy of Sporting Life.

The action gets underway at 6.05 as a field of eight head to post for the five furlong apprentice handicap for horses aged three and older.

Lequinto, trained by Tony Carroll, should prove tough to beat in the opener having notched up a quick hat-trick at Windsor, including with plenty in hand on Monday evening so if in a similar mood, should get the job done and bring up the four-timer.

Race two on the card (6.40) sees the two-year-old’s come to the fore as nine of them tackle the fillies’ novice stakes in class four over six furlongs.

Dictal showed plenty of promise on debut last month for trainer Andrew Balding, who also won this race last year, so could be the way to go for those with experience.

There are some interesting newcomers however, chief among them Hopeful Dream for the Ralph Beckett team, a No Nay Never filly whose dam was a half-sister to the very handy winner Midnight Mile.

Balding could bring up a quickfire double on the card with Assiri Heights in race three (7.15) as seven runners will line up for the six furlong novice stakes in class four, with the two-year-old a very interesting debutant having cost a huge 700,000 guineas whose dam is out of winning half-sister to Royal Ascot winner Profitable so is a very likely type on paper.

Recent Goodwood winner Goldwork is one to watch too off the back of that ready win 41 days ago.

A class four handicap over seven furlongs marks race four on the Newbury card (7.50) and the lightly-raced Vocal Legend gets the nod for trainer Charlie Hills after a runner-up on handicap debut on his last spin so is taken to build on that.

Cairdeas rates the next best, wearing cheekpieces for the first time, a creditable fourth at Newmarket just over a fortnight ago having rallied from a slow start out of the stalls.

Nine three-year-old’s will head to the start for the mile handicap in class five, the penultimate race of Thursday’s meeting (8.25).

Something Splendid is the selection in this one, a narrow runner-up over course and distance three weeks ago and that looks solid form so is taken to get off the mark and grab his first win this week.

Finally, the card comes to a close at 9.00 as a field of nine take on the mile and a quarter class five handicap, the longest race of the evening.

The Richard Hannon-trained Seventy looks the way to go here, stepping up in trip for handicap debut having made little impact in maiden company but this longer trip should be suitable for the three-year-old colt.
