Evening racing continues at Newbury’s Summer Evening Series with 425,000gns Kingman colt set to star

Another midweek, another meeting at Newbury Racecourse as the Summer Evening Series continues apace through the month of July.

Thursday’s card features six races, all of which are being shown live on Racing TV. The first gets underway at 6.10 and then concludes with the final contest at 8.40, with the Novice Stakes at 7.50 the feature race of the evening.

Up first is a Restricted Novice Stakes, where Haya Taal looks to build on a promising debut second at Kempton just over a fortnight ago, while the likes of 10/1 chance Dufresne and 7/2 shot Doddies Impact - a winner of the Brocklesby at Doncaster - could have a huge say in proceedings having had his route changed from Lingfield to Newbury.

Race two is another Restricted Novices Stakes but this time, it’s for the fillies. Mapmaker was an impressive winner on debut over course and distance last month but bombed out in the Albany at Royal Ascot. Perfect Spring failed to justify favouritism at Lingfield last month but that race may have come too soon after an encouraging mid-field finish at Goodwood, so is one to keep an eye on here.

The third race on the card is a 12-runner handicap and Lost In Time, trained by Dean Ivory, looks the one to beat having finished a ready winner at Yarmouth a week ago, building on a second-place finish on the all-weather at Lingfield. Khinjani looks to be the main threat, a lightly-raced sort who offered encouraging signs last time out when fourth in a handicap at Ripon.

The feature race arrives at 7.50, where 425,000gns Kingman colt Tony Montana takes to the track after a tough run in the Hampton Court Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He has the best form in this race however and looks the one to beat, though the likes of Fleet Admiral, who is trained by the Newbury-based Andrew Balding, should shape well here.

An 11-runner Class 5 Handicap is the penultimate race on the Thursday evening card at Newbury where four-year-old Stonking will look to produce a stonking performance to be first past the post. Sharp Distinction was an impressive third at Kempton last month and can build on that and Ancient Capital has course and distance from, though that was a second-place finish 11 months ago when last seen.

The action is rounded off with a Class 5 Handicap at 8.50, where course and distance winner Sergeant Tibbs makes a quick reappearance since a run at Ascot in May but will need a bit of rain to be competitive. The nod here goes to Symbol of Hope, who won two handicaps over five furlongs in May at Bath and has also finished second at Newbury in his last run.

Newbury Thursday selections:

6.10 - Dufresne

6.40 - Mapmaker

7.15 - Lost In Time

7.50 - Tony Montana

8.20 - Stonking

8.50 - Symbol of Hope
