Six-race card awaits, as Summer Series comes to a close at Newbury Racecourse

Newbury Racecourse hosts its final Summer Series fixture of the season on Thursday evening with a competitive six-race card on offer to bring the Series to a close.

Racing gets underway at 6.15pm with a class five handicap for amateur jockeys before rounding off at 8.45pm as 12 runners take on the one mile and four furlong handicap.

The opener (6.15) sees a large field of 13 head to post for the one mile and two furlong handicap for amateur jockeys in class five. Previous course and distance winner Blue Yonder for trainer Archie Watson is the pick of the field in race one and has been well-treated by the handicapper for that success so could well go in once again.

Race two on the card (6.45) is a class four maiden fillies’ stakes over the seven furlong trip. Glistening, for top trainers John and Thady Gosden, didn’t justify market support on debut when third at Yarmouth but showed enough in that performance to warrant respect at Newbury this time around. Of her rivals, Formal and Polygram are both interesting newcomers from the Sir Michael Stoute yard and a market check will reveal just how highly thought of they really are.

Smouldering looks the one to beat in race three on Newbury’s card (7.15) for trainer Clive Cox, a winner at Kempton back in May and a good third of eight in a Haydock handicap three weeks ago. Silent Flame won at Newbury two weeks ago and rates as the main threat in this class five handicap over seven furlongs.

Ten runners will head to the start to tackle the two-mile handicap in class five for horses aged three and upwards. The Crafty Mole hasn’t tasted defeat over the staying distances and is the selection in race four (7.45), potentially relishing an even further trip here off the back of a career-best at Thirsk last time out and bids for a hat-trick.

The penultimate race of the meeting is a nine-runner handicap over the one mile and two furlong distance (8.15) and Niloufar looks the one to beat for trainer Harry Charlton with three wins from seven runs so far this year including an eased down success at Chepstow a week ago. She carries a penalty here for that success but it shouldn’t cause too much bother for the three-year-old.

Finally, a 12-runner handicap in class five to bring the meeting - and the Summer Series - to a close at 8.15, with preference in the finale heading to Goblet Of Fire from the powerful Nicky Henderson yard, who can defy a 6lb hike in the weights here to strike a hat-trick.
