Sparvells triumph to win Sumner Trophy




Carol and Mike Sparvell won the Sumner Trophy, a mixed greensome competition, at West Berks Golf Club with 37 points. Georgie and Barrie Seaman were second on 35 while Jane and Patrick Wilmore were a point further back in third spot.

Meanwhile, there was a three-way tie on 37 points at the top of the Jersey Cup with the result resolved in the order of Colin Howe, Nigel Huszarik and Garry Postlethwaite on countback.

Giles Feltham continued his recent run of good form when he won the men's Saturday stableford with 33 points. Kevin Hopwood with 32 beat Graham Miles on countback to take second spot.

Gale McAuley with 32 points won the ladies’ ‘four clubs and putter’ competition Sian Soanes on 31 beat Tina Mulford on countback to take second place.

Peter Thornton won the men's midweek medal with gross 97, net 76. Ricky Skrzydlo with gross 104, net 77 was second while Alexander Anderson gross 92 net 79 beat John Loader gross 99, net 79 on countback to take second place.

In representative matches, West Berks 1 enjoyed a 4-3 home win against Silverstone in Division 2 of the Central Sevens League while the men’s Saturday team had a fine away win beating Ogbourne Downs by 3½ to 2½. The ladies entertained North Wilts in a match that ended in a 2-2 half while the men’s seniors’ team travelled to Drayton Park and lost 2-0 in a very close affair with four halved matches and two going to the seventeenth and eighteenth greens.

n Theal Golf Club kicked off its annual series of competitions with the Founders Bowl. This is a full members only competition which with good weather and excellent course conditions attracted a large entry, including Lady members playing off the red tees,

The Founders Bowl is a Board competition, which means that the winners' name is inscribed on the honours board in the club house under the relevant trophy.

This year's Founder Bowl name for the sign writer is Dylan Abraham, who led a bevy of low scorers with an excellent net 67. Two shots behind was Stuart Challis taking the runners up spot with net 69.
