Sport news in brief

A round-up of the sporting news in West Berkshire from the past week

NEWBURY Volleyball Club take on City of Bristol at Bradfield on Saturday a week after earning praise for their performance in losing 3-0 to National League Two South leaders Danes Watford.

NEWBURY Swimming Club's Zara Ryan collected six gold medals at Windsor SC's Open meet in Maidenhead.

The 12-year old scooped individual success in the 100 metres butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle and the freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.

THAMES VALLEY ABC fighter Jake Kingham swept past the previously unbeaten George Jago to take his place in the divisional finals of the ABA Schoolboys Championships at Bethnal Green next month.

The 12-year-old went into his qualifying bout at Reading on the back of a 9-3 record, taking on Slough ABC's Jago, who had won all seven of his bouts so far.

But Kingham produced a positive showing, forcing back Jago and unleashing some good combinations to earn a place in the next stage at Bethnal Green's York Hall on February 6, when he will be joined by club-mate Robert Phillips, who had a bye in the last round.
