Lambourn seal quarter-final tie but Newbury and Hungerford reserves bow out at home
LAMBOURN SPORTS are left as the area's sole survivors in the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup after Newbury and Hungerford Reserves made home exits from Saturday's fourth round.
Lambourn squeezed through 2-1 at home to fellow Hellenic Leaguers Milton United with Ben Matthews and Matt Pedder their men on target.
Hungerford Reserves went down 4-0 at home to Olney Town and Newbury also bowed out at home, going down 4-3 to North Berks League Didcot Casuals. The result maintained Newbury's lean streak that has seen them go without a win since December 17.
Casuals were bolstered by several Didcot Town players, and it was two of those – Fletcher and Lawrence Hoey - who contributed to their side's win, Fletcher notching two penalties after his brother had scored the 15th minute opener.
Those three goals came in the opening 20 minutes, Lawrence Hoey cutting through several tackles to score before he was brought down for his brother to score from the spot. And when JP Willis beat the offside trap to add number three, the tie looked to be over.
Marc Piper gave Newbury some hope after 30 minutes but Adam Bell conceded another penalty that was tucked away by Fletcher Hoey before the interval and although skipper Darren Jones netted from the spot after the break and added a late second, Casuals held out comfortably to reach the quarter finals.
