St Bart's senior cricketers defeat MCC XI
For the second year running, St Bartholomew's School defeated the Marylebone Cricket Club at Falkland
ST BARTHOLOMEW'S School senior cricketers defeated the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for the second year running on Tuesday (June 28).
Fielding first at Falkland's Enborne Lodge, the school's early bowling attack of Sharif Ahmadzai, Sam Trumper, Steven Hanney and Josh Winfield kept the run rate down with accurate bowling and good field placements from captain Trumper.
The first wicket came in the 15th over with former teacher Richard Taylor falling to an inside edge off the bowling of Winfield and the second soon followed with a run out in the 19th over.
However, the MCC regained composure with some strong batting that looked to be pushing the match out of the school's reach, with the next wicket not falling until the 38th over with the MCC at 166-3.
A late flurry of activity with both bat and ball then saw several runs scored and several wickets fall, with the MCC declaring on 265-8 from 54 overs.
In reply, Hanney and Tom Flack opened the batting for the school and despite Hanney being caught at silly mid off after showing early promise, Flack (82) and Winfield (84) forged an excellent partnership to take the school past the 150 mark.
And although both fell just short of their centuries and an invitation to a test match at Lord's, a patient innings of 60 not out from the skipper Trumper, together with aggressive batting from Jack Davis and Tom Herrington and support from Will Herrington saw the school side home by five wickets, scoring 266-5 off 52.1 overs.
School teacher Dave McGall said he was grateful to the scorers and umpires for helping with the match, while he also reserved thanks for all the supporters, Falkland Cricket Club for hosting the event and Mark Foster for helping to coach the school side.
He said: “Congratulations to all the boys for an amazing day, let's make it a hat trick next year.”
