St Nicolas Church of England Primary School girls win the lot in amazing unbeaten season

St Nicolas Church of England Junior School’s year 3 and year 4 girls finished their unbeaten season by winning the Berkshire School Football Association County Cup last month.

In doing so they became the first girls team from the school to accomplish this feat, winning the final at Emmbrook School in Wokingham.

The girls had booked their place in the final after beating a talented Birch Copse team in the quarter final, before knocking out reigning champions Parsons Down in a hard-fought semi final.

This earned them a place in the final against Polehampton School from Twyford.

The final started slowly as the teams tested each other, before St Nics’ captain Beth opened the scoring with a hard strike through a crowd of Polehampton players.

Frances in the St Nics goal then preserved the lead with a fine save from point blank range.

St Nics took control shortly afterwards, with Edie and Holly in defence closing down a series of Polehampton attacks.

The St Nic’s girls then took full advantage, as Olivia doubled the lead with a fine strike before Beth got her second moments later for 3-0.

Beth then sealed her hat trick before half time with a long distance strike into the corner.

A comfortable four goal lead meant the second half was less tense and St Nic’s were able to rotate the team, with Faye and Amelie controlling the midfield.

Flo made a fantastic save from a rare Polehampton attack before Sophia sealed a 5-0 win with a shot from distance across the keeper and into the corner.

The scoreline could have been even more convincing but for two disallowed St Nic’s goals.

This capped a fine season for the girls, in which they won every competition they entered.

They won the Finley Uphill West Berks School Cup earlier in the week after beating John Rankin 4-1 with two goals each from Clemmie and Olivia.

The previous month they emerged victorious from 20 schools to win the West Berks Schools indoor five-a-side tournament at Trinity School.

The St Nics girls’ season could not have been better, as they finished unbeaten across more than 20 matches.

Their success was built on fine defensive displays from the team with only 2 goals conceded all season compared to over 70 goals scored.

“The girls' performance this season has been an absolute triumph,” said headteacher Louise Allen.

“They played amazingly in the County Cup final and to be champions of the whole of Berkshire is a fantastic achievement”.
