Swinging surprise for diver Chris
The 19-year old became a member of the club last year and has played alongside his father Paul, who is also a club member.
But now the club has made him an honorary member in recognition of his athletic success since overcoming the life-threatening injury he sustained in 2009 when he suffered a ruptured spleen during a practive dive in Sydney, Australia.
The younger Mears is in full-on competitive mode in London following the springboard synchronsied competition and is preparing for next week’s individual springboard contest, but his father Paul said: “Chris is delighted that Sandford Springs have chosen to sponsor his membership.
“Chris spends most of his time training and so doesn’t get that much time to take part in sport recreationally. Having his membership sponsored means when the two of us are both free, its easy for us to get together to play a few rounds of golf”.
The club’s general manager Andy Wild added: “We’re excited to have such a promising Olympic athlete as one of our members.
“We were only too happy to sponsor Chris’s membership, as we know how important it is for him to be able to relax and unwind between training sessions”.
