Tadley edge closer to play-off spots with 2-0 Cobham win
Tadley Calleva’s play-off hunt continued on Saturday with another vital three points.
Cobham came to visit on a sunny day at Barlow’s Park, but there was no time for Calleva to relax.
Manager Joe Lawler went with his strongest side, but there was a place on the bench for youngster Wenzel Sar.
The opening stages were marked by a frenetic midfield battle, but there was little in the way of chances early on.
The first shot of the game came 34 minutes in, as Cobham fired over Craig Atkinson’s goal.
They were soon in the six-yard box though, as Joe Cummuskey slid in to deny an opening goal.
0-0 at half-time, Tadley knew that a point would do little to aid their play-off push.
The second-half saw a renewed intensity, as Brad Neal set up Kieron Farmer for a header which went just over.
In the 66th minute Tadley finally went ahead, as Jordan Goater’s shot from a free-kick was deflected into the Cobham net for 1-0.
All-time top scorer Brett Denham was looking dangerous, and he had the ball in the net a few minutes later.
This was ruled out for an apparent push, but just moments later Denham finally had his goal.
A looping free-kick found the striker in the box, who nodded a header over the keeper to wrap things up at 2-0.
An excellent team performance saw Tadley compete in a scrappy first-half, before taking their chances in the second.
The win puts pressure on the final play-off place, with Calleva now just two points behind.
There was additional success for Tadley’s Sheldon Wright, who won once again in a boxing match on Saturday evening.
Tadley will be hoping to land a knock-out blow of their own when they host Horley this weekend.
