U13 girls and U15 boys clinch Oxford League titles




TEAM Kennet’s under-13 girls and under-15 boys were crowned champions of the Oxford Young Athletes League following the final match of the season at Abingdon.

A big squad turned up for the match and Team Kennet finished second team on the day.

But there was plenty to celebrate for the two age-group winning teams.

The under-15 boys narrowly were beaten on the day, but there were some great performances, with Oliver Young winning the 100m in 12.4 with team mate Matias Manrique Huelgas taking second in the B string in 13.0.

Both teamed up in the 200m with Young coming second in 25.9 and Huelgas taking 3rd in the B string (26.4).

In the 800m Harry Smith stepped down from his 1500m to finish second in 2.21.6.

The field events secured high points, as they have done all season.

Josh Brian came second in the long jump with 4.77m with Huelgas just behind with 4.73m to win the B string.

A double win came in the javelin with Lauder Clarke throwing 40.10m – his first time over 40m – and Euan Jones 31.34m.

Another double win came in the shot through Berkay Altuntas (11.08m) and Oscar Hook (10.99m).

The under-13 girls were in a close match and were beaten by just one point, only the second time they have been beaten in seven matches this year.

Double wins came in the 800m through Ella Larkin (2.28.1) and Affra Bailey (2.41.9), and in the 1500m Darcey Claridge won the B string in 5.59.3.

The sprints saw a good result from Matilda Clare finishing second in 14.5 and Larkin taking the B string win in 14.9.

In the field events, Maisie McCurtin leapt 1.20m for third place in the high jump and Affra Bailey cleared 1.10m to win the B string, but non-scorer Orlagh Stratford leapt out of her skin to win the competition with 1.35m.

The under-13 boys came third on the day, but it was Jenson Nichols who stole the show, throwing 31.36m to win the discus and go straight to UK number 1.

Teammate Alfie Cronk also won the B string with 15.41m, and he kept up his 100-per-cent record by winning the shot with 6.40m.

Nichols scored another win in the javelin with a throw of 37.70m.

The high jump saw another A string win through Sam Atkins (1.35m).

Nichols secured second place in the 100m (13.9) and Seb Lane took another win in the B string (14.4),

The under-17 men came second on the day, with Theo Nightingale clearing 1.80m to win the high jump and securing second place in the long jump (5.36m) with James Simmons winning the B string.

Turkay Altuntas secured wins in the discus (39.06m) and shot (12.51m), with Will McDonald winning the B string.

The under 15 girls finished fifth, just missing out of third place by a few points.

In the 200m Emerald Hill Sawyer was third in 29.8 and Izzy Payne secondin the B string (30.8).

Olivia Bentley was second in the 300m (45.7) and the 800m (2.40).

The field events saw some good points and a double win came in the long jump with Payne (4.27m) and Hill Sawyer (4.17m).

In the under-17 women a double win came in the discus through Evie Lewis (27.14m) and Zoe Dickson (22.39m) and Dickson also came second in the shot (7.37m).
