Tennis star Barry Cowan to open new Boxford courts

On Sunday 29th June, former UK tennis star Barry Cowan will cut the ribbon on Boxford Tennis Club’s newly re-surfaced court as part of a community open afternoon to promote club membership to the local community.

The courts at Boxford Recreation Ground (RG20 8DD) will be open to the public 2.30pm-5.30pm on Sunday 29th June.

Complimentary pizza and refreshments will be provided courtesy of The Boxford restaurant.

“We are delighted that Barry and The Boxford are supporting our open afternoon,” said chair of Boxford Tennis Club, Jon Knight.

“We want more families and local residents to get involved in the club and to give tennis a try.

“The courts will be open for everyone in the community to come and have a hit with Barry and learn more about club membership.

“From just £55 per year for unlimited play, they really are great value community tennis courts”

“Community access to sports like tennis is such an important pillar for physical and mental fitness and overall health,” added Cowan.

“I hope lots of families and children will join club members in seeing what wonderful new facilities are on their doorstep.

“Who knows, with first-class courts like this, the next Wimbledon success story could be from Boxford!”

Left-handed tennis pro Cowan took Pete Sampras to five sets at Wimbledon in the second round in 2001.

General Manager of The Boxford Restaurant, Laszlo Veres, said:

“As a local business, we are always looking for ways to support our community, and the courts are a fantastic asset for the village.

“As well as offering a 10% discount at The Boxford to all Boxford Tennis members, we have helped with marketing and provided new court signage.”

The resurfacing of Boxford’s tennis courts was in large part made possible by an incredibly generous donation from one of the Tennis Club’s members who wishes to remain anonymous.

Support from The Boxford restaurant has also been key in encouraging more local families and residents to join and play.
