Kingfishers bolster play-off hopes as Thatcham move to within six points following thumping win over Ascot

Thatcham Town boss Yashwa Romeo admitted he’s delighted with his side’s progress after the Kingfishers hammered Ascot United 5-1 on Saturday.

A brace from in-form midfielder Mo Ceesay and goals from David Nyarko, Harry Hoath and Kyle Daniel-Spray helped Thatcham cruise to their sixth win in 11 matches as Romeo’s side moved up to seventh in the Isthmian League South Central table, just six points outside the play-offs.

“If you told me at the start of the season we’d be where we are now, I’d have snapped your hand off,” Romeo said.

“It’s been a really good period for us, we’ve only lost one of the last 11 and we’ve been banging the goals in.

“We’ve had goals from all over the place. I think we’ve got four players in the top 30 goalscorers in the league, which is fantastic.”

Young full-back Kyle Daniel-Spray enjoyed another excellent afternoon against Ascot, scoring and hitting the crossbar from a spectacular free-kick.

Since arriving from Reading, where he made 18 appearances in the under-18 Premier League, the teenager has impressed at both ends of the pitch and tops Thatcham’s assist charts with eight.

With fellow youngster Basim Mirtahmasebi also making his mark on the opposite side while deputising for the injured Tinashe Gwavava, Romeo has been full of praise for his full-backs.

He said: “Kyle is a great player, he’s been absolutely magnificent.

“He’s technically very good, he’s athletic and he’s got great delivery. He’s a fantastic asset.

“Bas has done really well too. He’s 17 and Kyle’s 19, and they’ve both settled in really well.”

The Kingfishers also handed a debut to six foot nine centre-half Andrew Matthews, who came on for the final few minutes on Saturday after signing in the week.

And Romeo is hoping the towering 31-year-old can help his side solve some of their persistent issues at set-pieces.

“We haven’t seen too much of him but he’s trained with us once and we’re hoping he can help us deal with balls into the box,” he said.

“There are a lot of very direct teams in this league and we think his height and experience is going to help us in that regard.”

Thatcham, who have only lost once since November 4, host 10th placed Hartley Wintney on Tuesday evening and Romeo is confident his side can continue their assault on the top six.

He said: “Hartley are on a good run themselves but we’re one of the form teams.

“The first thing is to make sure we don’t lose the game.

“We’re in the mix now and we want to push for the play-offs, we’re right where we want to be.”
