Thatcham RFC youngsters raise £1,300 on sponsored walk
Members of the Thatcham RFC U13s Dragons rugby team recently raised £1,300 by completing a nine mile sponsored walk.
The aim was to raise funds for their upcoming tour to South Wales, and for the rugby club as a whole.
Led by coaches Kevin and Andrew, and supported by a number of hardy parents, the Dragons successfully trekked the nine miles, starting at Greenham Common Control Tower.
The route circled the former airfield, before heading back to Thatcham Rugby Club at Henwick Worthy, via Newbury.
The walk ended with all of the young Dragons each taking turns to score a try on the club’s pitch.
Their motivation was to raise additional funds for the tour, which covers a behind-the-scenes look at the home of the Newport Gwent Dragons and the Principality Stadium.
The lads will also make a trip to the Big Pit to appreciate local history and culture, before playing Blaenavon RFC. They also aimed to raise money to buy new equipment for the club.
“A massive well done to the team for completing their sponsored walking challenge! We are so proud of them,” said Kevin May, head coach.
“The superb effort from the Dragons raised over £1,300, and we cannot thank everyone involved enough for making this possible.”
Just over two years ago, the team had only six players.
Now they’re up to 18 players, and are always looking to recruit more.
