Kingfishers Channel crossing triumph

Thatcham Town made it four wins from five Isthmian League South Central Division games thanks to a 1-0 win over Channel Islanders Guernsey.

The Kingfishers had been due to make the short flight in August, but issues with the pitch at Guernsey's Footes Lane home meant the fixtures were reversed and Yashwa Romeo's side braved the trip despite the January weather.

The only goal came in just the ninth minute when Cameron Rohart-Brown continued his prolific run, making the most of the conditions to score straight from a corner.

"It was a great result in difficult conditions," Romeo said.

"We were solid and competitive, we deserved to win.

"Toby (Fisher) told me he's got a 50 per cent clean sheet record since he's joined, that's testament to him but also the team as a whole, we've tightened up a lot at the back."

There was a new face in the Kingfishers line up in the form of attacking midfielder Harry Williams, who was signed from Holyport after he caught Romeo's eye on a scouting mission.

Romeo said: "I wasn't actually there to watch Harry but he caught my eye, he was that good, we're looking forward to having him."

Romeo was named manager of the month for December but the Thatcham boss played down the accolade, admitting he wasn't even aware the league had an awards committee.

"It was news to me, I had no idea," he said.

"It's down to the hard work of the coaches and players, I'm not too interested in individual accolades but it's a good reflection of how well the team has been doing."

Thatcham, who are 14th, travel to fourth placed Marlow this weekend.
