Thatcham Town keep survival hopes alive with back to back wins
Thatcham Town are now three games unbeaten.
They beat Helston Athletic 3-0 on Saturday in a convincing win which left manager Yashwa Romeo delighted.
Last weekend they drew 2-2 away at Cinderford, before beating them 1-0 at home the following Tuesday.
On Saturday they made it back to back wins, bringing them to within nine points of safety.
On-loan Maidenhead United striker Christian Johnson opened the scoring against Helston.
With just six minutes gone he latched onto the end of a well worked free-kick to flick home and put his side 1-0 up.
Shamar Moore made it 1-0 with eighteen on the clock.
Thatcham broke well after winning a midfield scrap, playing the ball out to Moore on the right who fired an inch-perfect strike past the Helston goalkeeper.
By the 50th minute it was 3-0, with the game wrapped up before the hour-mark.
Some good combination play down the right saw Thatcham play a simple square pass along the edge of the box, where Jamie Davies was waiting.
There was nothing simple about the finish though, as the Maidenhead loanee whipped a glorious left-footed shot into the top corner, leaving the keeper stranded.
Thatcham know that survival is a long-shot, and are simply focussed on enjoying their football.
This approach is one which is paying off for manager Romeo.
“Two wins, two clean sheets. It’s something we haven’t done all season,” he said.
“We’re making a go of it and we keep chipping away.
“I challenged our forwards before the game and told them that the work ethic is key.
“All of them came out of the blocks.
“They got their rewards for their hard work. That’s what football gives you.”
Romeo is keen to forget about league position, encouraging his players to take each game as it comes.
“We are where we are,” he said.
“You have to keep things a bit happy and jovial.
“We steer away from how important it is.
“All we can do is try to win games.
“We probably need to win another five from five, so we just keep working hard.
“Sometimes in these situations players can down tools.
“But these players definitely haven't.
“They want to work for each other.”
Thatcham have six games remaining and will need to win most, if not all of them to stand a chance of survival.
