Thatcham manager Jamie Leacock relishes new challenges for season ahead
Jamie Leacock is ready for new challenges when his Thatcham Town side get started in the Isthmian League South Central.
The Kingfishers begin their campaign on August 14, when Northwood come to the Stacatruc Stadium.
It will be the clubs first competitive home game since November and Leacock is relishing the opportunity.
“We all look forward to seeing the fixtures and seeing where we will play on the first day and so on, so seeing it all makes it all real.
“When you’re preparing for a long pre-season, it’s all about that first game and it’s great to be at home for the first game against a Northwood side with a new manager.
“I was actually pleased they re-structured the leagues because having been out for a while I think it would have felt a bit stale coming back into the same league.
“The fact that we have all these different clubs that we visit, the fact that there are more local derbies, I think it’s great and excited about it all.”
On Saturday, Thatcham host Hendon at the Stacatruc Stadium in what will be their first home game with a crowd since November 2020.
“Pre-season has been a bit stop-start with people being pinged or whatever, so it’s been a bit of a juggling act really.
“We had our first friendly last week, which was great, so I am hoping we can play on Saturday as it will be great being back at our home ground in front of fans because it has been a long time coming.
“It will be a big test against Hendon and I wanted to get some tough games so that it can give us a benchmark to see where we are at.”
Earlier this month, Dave Melin stepped down as chairman of the club and Leacock was grateful for his support throughout his spell.
“Dave is a great guy, he was well liked and he came in with a lot of ideas about how he wanted to push the club forward.
“I know he has had to juggle things, so he came to the decision he has made, but he has been great to me since I came to the club as he was heavily involved in my recruitment.”
