Jacob’s a cracker as Woods wins two for Newbury AC

Newbury Athletic Club’s juniors braved sweltering conditions to secure a third placed finish in round two of the Wessex Track and Field League in Winchester.

The club maintained its proud tradition of excelling in the under-17 age group, winning five of the six A string events and five of the seven B string events.

Jacob Woods kept up his unbeaten record in the 800m, going out hard from the gun and creating a big gap between himself and the chasing pack that proved unassailable.

In the same race, Jacob Glendenning, adopting a different tactic to his teammate, worked his way through the field to finish second and also secure the B string win.

Woods then recorded his second win of the fixture, coming home in 52.9s to triumph in the 400m, while Oliver Hamlin won the B string race in 55.3s.

Hamlin just missed out on victory in the long jump, having to settle for second after a leap of 5.73m.

Meanwhile, Jack Collings, the new 800m English schools champion, ran under 4m30s for the first time to win the 1500m, while teammate Aston Howse ran well to win the B string.

There was another double in the women’s 800m, with Katya Burgess coming out on top of a battle right to the line to win the A string and Rosie Stockwell selflessly showing great teamwork to win the B string.

Multi-eventer Anna Delavere won the A string shot put with a throw of 8.53m and Maya Cahoon claimed the B string, also throwing over eight metres.

Delavere went on to secure runner-up spots in the A string 200m and long jump.

Beth Palmer continued her fine season with another A string win, throwing 21.03m in the discus, and Libby Stockwell secured second in the A string 300m in 47.6s.

In the under-15s, Connie Hutchins made a perfect track debut, leading the 800m from start to finish to triumph in 2m28.5s, while Mariella Frood finished strongly to win the B string.

Tabitha Ducker secured the best result in the under-13 age group, making the cut for the final two throws in the javelin and going on to finish second in the A string with 21.44m, while Sunna Mahmood won the B string.

In the boys’ events, Oliver Blatchford produced an impressive run of 28.2s to finish second in the A string 200m, which was matched by Daniyal Mohammed in the B string.
