FOOTBALL: Hungerford and Newbury open with wins while Thatcham sit back and await Wednesday night kick-off

HUNGERFORD got their new Evo Stik League campaign off to a perfect start as three first half goals set up a comfortable 3-0 opening day victory at home to Bridgwater Town.

They settled to go ahead after 20 minutes when John Wheeldon drove in free kick for Jon Boardman to head home and a second goal soon followed when Nicholas Ogbanute found the top corner with a scorching shot.

It was Ogbanute who was cut down for Mark Draycott to add the third goal from the penalty spot before the interval, and only a couple of smart saves from Stuart Wood kept the scoring down after the break.

Hungerford return to action on Tuesday at Abingdon United while Thatcham Town have to wait until Wednesday night to kick-start their league campaign at home to Gosport Borough.

NEWBURY got off the mark in the Uhlsport Hellenic League with two second half goals seeing off Finchampstead at Faraday Road. Both goals came within the space of five minutes from Marc Piper and Darren Jones to take Newbury into Tuesday night's home game with Woodley Town in good shape.

LAMBOURN SPORTS' return to Hellenic League football ended in a 2-1 defeat at Penn and Tylers Green. Reno Sepede gave the home side an early lead that was cancelled out by Sam Mooney, only for Chris Hurst to net a late winner.

Lambourn face a trip to Milton United tonight (Monday).
