Toby helps Windies to Twenty20 glory

The Newbury-based Radford is assistant coach/batting coach for the world-beaters and said: “Our dressing-room was a madhouse, with lots of hand-shaking, back-slapping, and some incredible Caribbean-style dancing by the players.
“They definitely know how to celebrate, and it was so richly deserved after a brilliant victory over Sri Lanka in front of their passionate supporters who made a massive noise at first but were stunned into silence at the end.”
Radford began his career as a talented seven-year-old striking cricket balls in Northcroft Park, Newbury, and attended Speenhamland School followed by Park House and St. Barts.
As a teenager he played for local clubs East Woodhay, Newbury, Hungerford and Thatcham, and as a professional for Middlesex and Sussex, before turning to full-time coaching, first as Cricket Development Officer for Berkshire, and later for the England and Wales Cricket Board.
After setting up the Middlesex Cricket Academy, Toby was appointed second-team coach, and then first-team coach, and he played a leading part in helping the club win the Twenty/20 title and qualify for the Champions League.
A short time later the West Indies Cricket Board invited him to set up and manage the Sagicor High Performance Centre in Barbados – effectively the Caribbean academy – where he spent 16 months coaching what was regarded as the next group of international players, and several have already come through to the Test team.
Radford was appointed assistant coach/batting coach to the national side earlier this year and he added: “It’s been a long journey from those days in Northcroft Park, and I never dreamt that I’d ever be part of a West Indian team and celebrate being crowned world champions. It’s a great feeling.”
