Unbeaten Town have forgotten what losing feels like
Newbury Town’s sensational season shows no signs of stopping following a 3-0 Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup win over higher level opposition in Cheltenham Saracens.
With the World Cup in full swing, Town delivered a decisive lesson in knockout football, outclassing Saracens to make it 11 wins in 11 in league and cup this term.
It was a dominant performance from start to finish from Newbury, who were ahead 20 minutes in when Jake Allan finished well to make it 1-0.
Town had one foot in the next round on the hour as the ever-reliable Carl Jenner popped up to double his side’s lead.
Saracens went in search of a route back into the contest but it was game over with 10 minutes to go, Aaaron Voller on hand to wrap up a memorable afternoon for Newbury, who have scored 47 goals in 11 games this season.
"I've forgotten what it feels like to lose," said Town stalwart Danny Langford.
"The main objective is still to win the league but it's nice to be in all three of the cups.
"Cheltenham was a real test to find out where we're at, it's easy to get complacent when you're winning football matches every week.
"It's never easy travelling an hour and a half, a big thanks to West Berkshire Van Hire who helped us out with a minibus which was invaluable.
"We had an idea of what to expect, we knew it would be physical and they'd be direct.
"We did a real job on them, all the lads were absolutely tremendous and it feels like things are coming together."
Town are in cup action again on Saturday, taking on Reading YMCA FC in the Berks and Bucks Cup.
Meanwhile there was cup disappointment for Hungerford Town Swifts, who crashed out of the Bateman Sports Presidents’ Challenge Cup after a 4-2 defeat to Headington Amateurs.
Toby Thorp scored his third Swifts goal in two games when he struck inside the first quarter of an hour and Rocky Rowbottom had Hungerford’s second just before the hour mark, but it was Headington who proved the more clinical to progress to the next round.
Mortimer were another side dumped out of the cup, losing 5-1 to FC Beaconsfield.
Like Newbury, Mortimer are in Berks and Bucks Cup action on Saturday with the visit of Letcombe, scheduled as a 1:30 kick-off.
