Town knocked out from the spot

Michael Nardiello’s scruffy spot kick 20 minutes from time was typical of the sort of goal that was going to win a game of few chances that saw goalkeepers hardly ever tested.
Thatcham threw in another goalkeeper – the much travelled Jon Beames – and had an even more travelled newcomer on the bench in midfielder Joe Harris, who returned earlier this year after emigrating to Australia three years ago and had a brief stint at Hungerford last term.
Migrating to the Tiverton box as Thatcham’s major problem on the day. With Danny Seaward going solo up front, Thatcham had possession but little penetration with Seaward out-numbered and overpowered.
Not that Tiverton created much themselves. Jules Emati-Emati had two half-chances while Adam Everiss wasted a free kick opportunity for Thatcham before the hosts created the game’s best moment when substitute Charlie Hill forced Chris Wright to save well from his nicely-struck volley.
But the single goal that always looked like settling te tie came after 70 minutes when Damien Smith needlessly brought down David Steele when he as going nowhere and substitute Nardiello’s scuffed penalty beat Beames to bag the £2,300 purse.
