Town off to Heath for top of the table clash
And it could be a feast of goals with the firepower on display
TWO versus one is the order when Thatcham Town go to reigning champions Flackwell Heath in their Hellenic League on Saturday.
Thatcham hold a five point lead over Heath, who have one game in hand and know that they need a win to keep in close contact.
But Thatcham co-boss Gareth Thomas is playing down the game as a potential title-decider: “We’re not thinking we are going into this game to win or lose the league,” he said. “We’ve got 12 games to go and its just a step towards it. If we’re beaten, we’re beaten, and if we win it , we haven’t won the legaue
“But it would go a long way towards knocking them out of their stride and would put us eight points ahead of them and they would need to win games.”
The match has plenty of potential when it comes to goals. Heath’s leading marksman Danny Burnell has 23 goals from 24 games this term, while Thatcham’s Shane Cooper-Clark has the same number from 32 matches for Bracknell and Thatcham, where he has six from seven games.
Thatcham can also throw into the mix Jon Bennett, who cracked a hat-trick in last week’s 5-0 win over Milton United and has 14 goals from 25 games to his credit this season - at Thatcham and Flackwell Heath!
Thatcham will have defender Mark Hughes back on duty following injury, but Thomas himself is a doubt after being laid low by a virus.
