Town replace neighbours at the top

Thatcham move in with a win at Cinderford as Hungerford crash again at Taunton

Taunton Town 1 Hungerford Town 0

HUNGERFORD'S wheels slipped further off track as they suffered their fourth defeat in five league games and lost the top spot they have held since August.

Jon Wheeldon's own goal 15 minutes from time gave mid-table Taunton victory and sent Hungerford sliding into third place, behind Bideford and their Thatcham neighbours.

They had the chances to win it, especially in the opening 45 minutes when Luke Brewer went close, Jamie Gosling was denied by goalkeeper Chris Astley and Mark Draycott blazed over from a good opening.

Goalkeeper Michael Watkins saved well from Andy Butler, but the game appeared to be heading for stalemate until Ross McNab found space to drive in a cross and Wheeldon could only turn it into his own net.

Hungerford have a chance to find some form when they entertain Daventry Town in the Red Insure League Cup on Tuesday night with a 7.30pm kick off.

THATCHAM kept the top spot ‘in house' in the Evo Stik League South's Division One South and West as they snatched the leadership with another solid showing on the road.

Thatcham now top the table on goal difference from Bideford but have a game in hand with Hungerford a point adrift and having played two games more than the leaders.

They won with a second half goal from James Clark, who half given Thatcham their first bite when he was denied by Cinderford goalkeeper Alex Harris, who also came to Cinderford's rescue when he denied Jemel Johnson before defender Andy Lewis cleared Sean Cook's follow-up effort off the line.

Clark's decider came on the hour mark when he was on the end of a quick break to beat Harris with a neat finish, and Robbie Sadler might have added a second with harris again the home side's saviour.

Lewis Sommers tested Paul Strudley as Cinderford tried to salvage the game, and Dan Harrison went closest with a deflected shot as Thatcham held on to look down on the rest of the league.

Thatcham are also in a Red Insure Cup action on Tuesday night when they travel to Wimborne Town.
