Trainer Jones ‘very, very happy’, as 12/1 Caburn wins Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury
There was a surprise in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury on Saturday, as 12/1 shot Caburn won a thrilling contest.
Trained by Newmarket’s Jack Jones, the two-year-old made a late surge to slip between the 4/1 Vingegaard and 7/1 Time For Sandals.
Reaching the lead of the pack with just metres to go, he won by a neck and a short-head to seal victory.
Both owner Jones and jockey Dylan Hogan claimed their first victories at Newbury, with the young rider telling the press how “I've always liked him since day one and I begged the owners not to sell him.”
“They turned down 75,000 for him so I think my faith in him has come to the fore.
"I was outpaced early and there was a little bit of traffic in front of me but he was very gutsy when I needed him towards the end.
“I'm very, very happy!"
Young trainer Jones said how “that was unreal! I'm delighted.”
“For us to have runners at meetings like these on Saturdays is rare at this stage.
“I've been very, very happy with how things have been going.
“Last year we really got rolling and I was advised to buy this guy as a yearling but I never dreamed we'd even be here, let alone winning it!”
Elsewhere, the day got underway with a 16/1 winner in Phantom Flight, who pounced on the leader with a few furlongs to go.
The second race saw a 10/1 winner, as Temporize shocked the favourites ridden by Connor Beasley in the two mile handicap.
3:00 saw the Fidelity Energy Hackwood Stakes, although on this occasion it was a favourite who lived up to the billing.
Elite Status was 5/2 leading into Saturday morning and stayed true to form as the three-year-old won the Group 3 over 6f.
The 4:10 was an intriguing Novice Stakes as The Waco Kid took victory for Hugo Palmer and jockey Oisin Murphy, originally priced at a generous 3/1.
The 4:45 was won by Dubai Melody, in an excellent ride from Rossa Ryan who tracked the leaders and timed his break well.
Circe won the final race of the day from 11/2, ridden by Hollie Doyle for Richard Hannon.
6/5 favourite Battle Queen was a close second for Andrew Balding after being bumped at the start, but pushed the winner all the way to the line in a good recovery.
