Hungerford Town walking footballers make Thames Valley Walking Football League debut

History was made on Sunday as Hungerford Town’s Walking Football team made their debut in the Thames Valley Walking Football League.

Until this point, Hungerford’s walking footballers had played in local friendlies and tournaments against a range of other sides in the south.

Their numbers grew steadily throughout their first year of existence, with the men’s side putting together a string of good performances and claiming scalps against some recognised local sides.

A women’s team was also established last year, as the club’s walking division grew in popularity.

On Sunday the hard work of organisers and players paid off, as the side made their debut in an official walking football league for the first time.

The opening round of matches saw them remain unbeaten, winning once and drawing four of their fixtures.

The day began with a highly creditable draw against Oxford United, as Hungerford held their own against established opposition.

They followed this with a dramatic draw against Wycombe Chairboys.

Trailing 1-0 in the dying moments, it was John Fletcher who tucked home a penalty with virtually the last kick of the game to rescue a 1-1 draw.

Up next was another Buckinghamshire side, Wycombe Swans.

Hungerford kept these opponents at arms length, as captain Dave Allen smashed home a strike from distance to open the scoring.

Andy Worrall made it 2-0 via a slight deflection late on to wrap things up and seal maximum points for Hungerford.

Two goal-less draws wrapped up the day’s action.

Hungerford drew 0-0 with both Charters and Woodley Pensioners, as goalkeeper Jim Macleod worked wonders between the sticks.

The Ireland international starred with a number of excellent saves, conceding only one goal all day.

All the Hungerford players did themselves proud on a landmark day for the club.

A team which began as a group of friends looking to get active and socialise, has led them to being a competitive side at a regional level.
