Not so fine and Dando as Woodhay’s woes go on
East Woodhay’s dire start to their Hampshire Cricket League Division 1 campaign with the bat continued on Saturday following a two wicket defeat to Purbrook.
East Woodhay, who slip to the foot of the table, were put in to bat and were bowled all-out for just 94.
Only Richard Dando (32) and Alan Williams (12) reached double figures as the visitors were dismissed inside 32 overs.
That left Woodhay’s bowlers with an awful lot to do but a defiant Dando and the rest of the attack made a good go of it, with Purbrook eventually limping over the line eight down.
Dando led the charge with four wickets for 24 runs from his 10 overs, while Alan Williams (2-25), Samuel Clements (1-13) and George Walters (1-31) all made life difficult for the hosts in a spirited rearguard action.
Meanwhile, Donnington were left to rue some fairly ponderous batting as they slipped to a 21-run defeat to Old Basing 3rd in Division 5 North East.
Donnington, who won the toss and elected to field, kept things tight throughout as they restricted their hosts to 176/6 from their 40 overs.
Sid Gogineni finished with two wickets, while none of the visitors' five bowlers went at a rate of more than 5.0.
Donnington took too long to get going with the bat and so, despite productive innings from Antony Durdin (30) and Adrian Waters (32), left themselves too much to do, falling short and slipping to fourth from bottom.
In Division 4 North, Ashford Hill won a thrilling contest with Kingsclere by just seven runs.
Ashford Hill were sent in to bat and posted 178/8 from 45 overs, with some quickfire late runs from Henry Johnson (32) as well as valuable contributions from Chris Hanney (26) and Jack Grove-White (21) helping them to a competitive total.
Kingsclere put on 51 for the first wicket but took too long in doing so, with accurate bowling across the board and three wickets for Grove-White restricting the hosts to 171/9 and earning Ashford Hill a hard-fought win.
Elsewhere, Calum Saint smashed 55 while Matt Stead, Will Philpott and skipper William Belfield all added scores of more than 40 as AWE Tadley thumped Compton and Chandlers Ford 5th by 66 runs.
