Car fire closes one lane of M4 near Hungerford

Occupants have lucky escape

The occupants of a car on the M4 near Hungerford had a lucky escape this morning (Fri), after it caught fire.

One pump from Newbury and a second from Swindon were called at 10.15am, to the M4 eastbound where a black Ford Focus was ablaze.

The four occupants of the car had got out unhurt.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze with two hosereels.

The cause was put down to an oil leak, resulting in the car losing power, before it caught alight.

Firefighters closed one lane of the M4 eastbound and the hard shoulder during the incident, before leaving the scene around 11.45am.
