NEWBURY’S hopes of a end of season silver lining to a cloudy season were ended when they were booted out of the semi-finals of the Hellenic League’s Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup.
Newbury were due to be at home to Ardley United in the last four after winning 2-1 at Rayners Lane in the quarter-finals, but the west London club lodged a formal complaint about an ineligible player and fellowing a league investigation, Newbury admitted that they had fielded a non-eligible player.
The tie was awarded to Rayners Lane, who will now entertain Ardley next Tuesday.
Newbury are due at Brimscombe and Thrupp for a league game on Thursday night and on Monday make the hop to Waterside Park to take on Thatcham Town in the Bank Holiday afternoon derby.
That will be Town’s final game of the season, while Newbury have one remaining league game at Holyport on April 18.
